CLARK, Albert

No.5933436, Private, Albert CLARK
Aged 22

1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment
Died of Illness in Captivity on Monday, 14th December 1942

Albert Clark was born 9th March 1920 (Newmarket Q2-1920 3B:994) the son of Morley and Mary Ellen CLARK (née NORMAN) of Burwell.

In the 1939 register his father [8-8-1884] an agricultural foreman, and mother [22-11-1891] were at Gravel Pit Farm, Heath Road, Burwell. There are 3 closed records (his brothers/sisters ?).

The British surrendered in Singapore on February 15th 1942 and the prisoners were subjected to horrific treatment by the Japanese, many used as labour on the infamous Burma railway, many dying en route as slaves to the Japanese mainland.
A great number of them were from East Anglia as the 4th & 5th Suffolks and the 1st and 2nd Cambridgeshires were amongst the defenders of Singapore in the last days of the battle.
Albert died of dysentery ("Battalion at War" by Michael Moore) at a place unknown. There is a mass of information on the reverse of his Japanese PoW card, unfortunately all written in Japanese.
